Paying zakah on excess wealth is a religious obligation upon all Muslims and is the third of the five pillars of Islam. In Arabic, zakah means purification. Paying zakah is meant to remind Muslims to be appreciative of the blessings that Allah (swt) has bestowed upon them, and to help empower those who have less.
The Luton Islamic Centre collects and distributes zakat to help people in the local community who qualify as recipients, in accordance with Islamic law. All applicant undergo a thorough process of verification to ensure they are genuinely in need of zakah.
Some of the recipients of our zakah have been:
- New Muslims
- Single parents
- The homeless
- The indebted
- Students of knowledge
- For dawah purposes
